Last Wednesday I attended North-by-South Theatre Company’s 2018 Season Launch at The Butterfly Club. And what a night it was!

The Season opened with their first show Someone Like You which was written and directed by the company’s founder, and our good friend, Cal Robinson-Taylor.

Someone Like You looks at relationships and explores their triumphs and turmoils in a powerfully truthful manner, and was an amazing opening to their season. And just as a side note – the beautiful trio of actors performing in the show are the real deal. They’re raw and honest, and have honed in on their characters in an amazing way, and I commend them for their detailed work.

Cal wrote Someone Like You in his final year of university at the Ballarat Academy of Performing Arts (BAPA) and is a piece clearly very close to Cal’s heart.

When you write something, be it music, novels, or in this case theatre, it very much becomes your baby. And letting it go can be very difficult. When it comes to theatre, getting something up on stage can be incredibly difficult. It takes time, effort, passion and a whole lot of talent – all which North-by-South have.

Which is why I’m so excited for the rest of their season this year, because if Someone Like You is anything to base it off, great things are yet to come.

Someone Like You is running at The Butterfly Club until Sunday, 25 February 2018 – so make sure you don’t miss out. Tickets can be purchased here.
